Mets‘ Maine leaves with cramp in forearm

Mets right-hander John Maine left Saturday night’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies in the sixth inning with a cramp in his left forearm.

Maine threw a fastball to Ryan Howard and walked off the mound holding the elbow on his non-throwing arm. He took a couple of warmup pitches and decided he couldn’t continue.

Aaron Heilman came in as the emergency reliever with the score tied at 3 and no runners on base. Heilman struck out Howard to end the inning.

Maine (8-6, 3.91 ERA) allowed three runs and one hit _ all on Howard’s three-run homer in the fourth inning. He struck out five.

Schneider’s pinch-double lifts Mets past Phillies (AP)

New York Mets' starting pitcher John Maine holds his left forearm after suffering a cramp during the sixth inning of a baseball game against the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday, July 5, 2008, in Philadelphia. Maine left the game and the Mets won 9-4.

John Maine’s arm trouble was only a cramp in his non-throwing arm. Ryan Church blamed his dizziness on a migraine unrelated to his concussions. And the New York Mets‘ late deficit against the majors’ best bullpen was erased with a timely pinch hit. So many things could have gone worse for the Mets. Instead, they were the ones who got to celebrate.
